If it was about Mermaids, then that's something we should all be concerned about. They have been really crossing some lines recently with their actions. In particular the chest binder provided to a 14 year old even though she had told them her parents had said no. The homophobia on their forums. It's a mess.

A fourteen year old is old enough to make and understand informed decisions about their own body, regardless of their parent's transphobia.

I agree. My issue is that we don't KNOW that was the reason why they said no. In my experience it's rarely straightforward transphobia and much more nuanced. It's also really fecking shady for complete strangers to be essentially making choices for a child behind that child's parents back. That opens up a whole can of worms. A much better approach would have been to have vast amounts of info available to allay parents concerns, or even a phone line where parents can call with questions. Assuming everyone is a raging transphobe straight out is not helpful, it encourages division instead of providing room for people to learn and grow. Also the approach Mermaids is taking is also likely to long term damage this kids relationship with their parents.

Children are not property of their parents. You seem to think they are. A fourteen year old is old enough to make informed choices about their own health and gender identity. If they want a binder, they should have one. Their parents opinions on the subject are irrelevant to this point.

So if a muslim 14 year old girl got really convinced female circumcision was the best thing for her, you'd also wholeheartedly support her?

You're an idiot. Binders are not consequence free and can cause damage. No kids aren't the property of their parents, but the reason kids are kids and not adults is because they haven't yet fully developed their ability to think critically and cannot therefore make fully informed decisions. Medical decisions regarding them is slightly different but only when the child is dealing with a trained medical practitioner. This is not a case of that at all. This is some random person in a charity and what they have done is highly inappropriate.

Cheeseburgers are not consequence free and can cause damage. What's your point?

NAYRT - and parents regularly mak food choices for their kids, what's your point?

Shhh, nuance is not permitted! Mindless agreement only! TWAW/TMAM, womanhood is a vibe, JKR is the Great Satan, etc etc...

(Anonymous) 2022-10-01 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT I'm all for nuance, but "trans women are women" and "trans men are men" are just statements, not ridiculous battle cries, and "womanhood is a vibe" is something I hear more from my fellow cis women than anyone trans.
