I've been trying to book a vacation for Santorini next year, and everywhere is just out of budget. Not massive amounts out of budget to make it worth giving up, but just tantalisingly close, a couple of hundred, out of reach. Just enough to make it almost be feasible, but not quite. That is the bit that hurts.

Don't go to Santorini. Go to Crete or Corfu or even Mykonos. By next year Chinese tourists will be back in droves and you'll spend your Santorini vacation wondering why you did this to yourself.

If you go to Crete or Corfu then you get the British drunks though. At least the Chinese tourists are not loudly drunk and belligerent all the time.

Maybe try Ithaca or Kythira.

I haven't found that to be a problem. Crete at least is big enough to absorb the crowd. The problem with Chinese tourists is not behavior, but the sheer number squeezed into that tiny space. At peak times you couldn't walk down the main thoroughfare in Oia without feeling like you're in Times Square. It's nuts.

don't go to Mykonos. I spent 3 days there on my last trip and it was the worst time ever

Top class resorts if you're into that sort of thing. You can hide from the parties there. But if there's budgetary concern then yeah, should skip.
