people just aren't interested in artistic meaning anymore. if the show isn't literal, or if it doesn't "make sense," it's something you can dunk on as "wrong".

I don't know how this happened? it's not just purity culture and cinema sins that contributed to this, but I need to work out what it is, so I can stop it. Fandom is more boring than ever.

Honestly, sometimes it is the creators not putting enough thought into their depiction of a story. Even if something was meant to "connect," it doesn't mean the connection itself was handled well.

But yes, it can be frustrating when you can see what symbolism was intended yet it's completely written off as lazy/wrong by fans who clearly had much different expectations.

I wouldn't hold my breath on stopping it, though. There's always going to be "that fan" in every audience.

Yeah, there have definitely been times where I could see what a creator was trying to get at, but they handled it so sloppily that it just never quite got there.

Can you give any examples?

I'm not a fan of 'artistic' type media, but that doesn't make it bad or that someone else won't vibe with it, it just means I'm more of a fan of straight-forward plots with explanations. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with me either.
