Also from the 'paranoid this secret is about me' files, please tell them. Gently, respectfully, and kindly if you can, but as someone who is constantly terrified my friends are lying through gritted teeth with every word of praise: honesty. please.

I kind of have the opposite problem. I met and befriended someone after they commented on my fic and they have said several times that they think my writing is better than anyone's! Favorite author! Better than published stuff!

Recently Friend recced me another favorite author "because your writing style reminds me of them" and.......now I am second-guessing myself a lot. (The plot was good, just the prose went past purple and into ultraviolet... page-long paragraphs...)

Awkward. Would your friend be open to constructive criticism, do you think? I'm not sure I'd just straight up tell them if they hadn't already expressed an interest in concrit. And to be honest, I'd still be wary about telling them even if they claimed they wanted concrit.

Does your friend want to improve their writing or want your help to do so? Because otherwise, idk that telling them your real opinion of their work would help. Maybe just try and avoid talking about writing with them?
