I always feel like it also really depends on the attitude with which you wear it. I've seen mid effort costumes work really well because the cosplayer wearing it was still dedicated to the costume and I've seen costumes that were really well done but had no effect because the person wearing it kept slumping about like a wet sack of potatoes (when that didn't fit the character at all).

Cosplayers can be assholes towards other cosplayers though, so I hope you don't meet any of the shitty ones.
