Marmite sandwiches. Excellent.

I can understand not wanting a creator to see one's melodramatic bitching, but if you're only worried about his hurt feelings, rest assured. Gaiman's well used to all of that, and he seems to have a really well adjusted attitude, i.e. he doesn't give a rat's ass.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.

Also, creators shouldn't search their own names/properties on social media if they don't want to risk seeing anything negative.

NG is a family friend of one of my friends. He showed up in one of their FB posts about Netflix Sandman and it was as cringey and awful as it sounds.

Go on, tell us what happened...

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, nonny, you can’t just leave us hanging like that. We need deets.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, being in indie fandoms I feel it too much.
Also I am in Sandman fandom and it's a bit awkward when I see Gaiman.
But frankly I think that I just shouldn't tag creators with things I don't want them seeing and we are all good.
And for small ones I have closed groups there I can bitch without hurting small creators and their creativity.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't much care about his feelings but I prefer being able to bitch about something I don't like without risking getting into some sort of annoying discussion with the creator about how I'm wrong, actually. People are allowed to just dislike things!
It's like just wanting to vent sometimes without someone giving "helpful" advice all the way through.

Agreed. I've said before that if I ever miraculously became a creator of some series that gained fans, I would never go into fan-oriented spaces. I'd be happy to know they existed, and fully supportive of them having their fun, but I'd leave the boundary intact. Sure, there's instances where it can be fun for fans and creators to interact, but I also fully believe fans deserve to have their own space completely separate from the creator, where they can have their fun and do their own thing without the creator always seeming to "hover", you know?

I'm BEC with him for acting like such a smug authority of everything when literally all that is good about his works comes from other people collaborating / adaptations being improved by other people.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
he got too much goth pussy and it went to his head

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, my first intro to Gaiman was Sandman, followed by Good Omens, both of which I loved. Then his solo stuff was...really not as good. He works great in a team but not as a solo writer.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
If he’s smart, he won’t look at any posts criticizing his works.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if a creator or other celebrity isn't publicly on a particular platform they still could be on it secretly, and even if thet aren't on it at all, people could link them to stuff posted there. So, there's always a (probably very small) chance that anything you post publicly could get back to the person. As long as you don't address them directly I wouldn't worry about it, though.

When I posted about how much I hated So You Want to Be a Wizard (not even tagged), the actual freaking author told me I shouldn’t write anything on the Internet I wouldn’t write on a billboard. I decided I’d be willing to put on a billboard that she’s an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
wow. that's some boundary-crossing from the author. not cool.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, wtf! As a writer I firmly believe that reviews are for READERS and not the writers. I also believe in 'don't go looking yourself if you can't handle criticism because not everyone is going to like your shit'.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes. That feels like she was trying to intimidate you into not voicing a negative opinion of her work, which is... well, yikes. She should not have commented at all. Published authors know full well that not everyone is going to love their work and that's just life.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she shouldn't publish any of her writing if she didn't want people commenting on it, then.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
On one hand it's so cringe from DD, authors shouldn't do it. On the other - oh fuck off, this book means a lot to me, so yay go author go, you have no taste

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2022-10-12 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well if you posted your hate in a public part of the internet, yeah, you should be prepared for people to read it and have reactions to what you wrote?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you secret maker!

And yeah, nothing here is getting me over my feelings but I appreciate that some of you get it. I can't stand the potential cringe, I'd abandon my 10 year blog and move into the woods of he were to reply to my melodramatic bitching but I would never stop anyone else.
