Re: Non-fandom secrets!

I had friends over today and one complimented me on how nice and orderly my flat always is and how she wishes she could keep her own flat as tidy.

The thing is, I have such a high tolerance for dirt that 99% of the time I live in such filth that no one would want to set foot in my flat. I have no sense of what a normal/acceptable level of mess is. I refuse to invite unannounced guests in for this reason.

When I know people are coming I basically spend the week before cleaning my flat until everything is spotless and freshly laundered. But this doesn't last. By this time next week I'll have several days worth of unwashed dishes in the sink, freshly laundered clothes lying on the couch because I can't be bothered to put them away and not have once wiped down my dining table even though I know that now that my flat is already clean, it wouldn't really take much time week to week to keep it that way. I just don't do it.

I feel this so hard lol

I've gotten a little better about it in the past 6 months or so but that's really because my standards for cleanliness my whole life have been so low that even the most minor effort is a huge improvement. It just feels like it would take so much effort to keep my apartment actually fully truly clean all the time. And then if I'm not going to put the effort in to keep it actually clean, what's the point of putting effort in to make it look slightly less uninhabitable if I'm the only one who has to live there anyway.

DA

Feeling both of you hard. I feel pleased with myself when I do the most minor bit of cleaning; I really don't like having people to visit except a couple of close friends.

The fucked up thing is that I do genuinely feel better when my space is clean

but I still just don't have the energy to do it half the time

I've been there. And I still get there. Don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure your friend probably isn't neat either, and that's why they complimented how clean your place is. <3
Truth is, so many of us are so drained we can't always keep things as clean as we would like, because it's human nature to want to have things be neat and to feel clean!! It's just, the world and life get in the way. So...please, if possible, give yourself a pat on the back for getting your place cleaned for a while!

For me, I let small piles of "neat stacks" or shopping bags full of things build in my room for a while. They're not "neat" when I have no room for comfortable walking or sitting outside of my bed or desk. Sometimes I don't wash the dishes for days.

Allowing myself to do small cleanups (wipe sink in bathroom even though whole bathroom needs to be clean, maybe next day sweep the floor) has helped my big cleanup days go by faster, I've noticed in the past 3~ months I started the small/spot cleanups.

You're trying your best secret OP. I think that is enough. One step at a time.
