I'm not a Kylo Ren fan and don't know who the middle guy is, but Jaskier is delightful and a breath of fresh air from all the Broody Mc Boodersons in the show.

I'm not attracted to men either and I get twitchy when it's assumed that if I like a male character a lot it must be because I'm attracted to him. (I'm also not attracted to women but being a woman myself almost nobody assumes that's the reason when I like a female character.) I know, that's probably a big reason for most of the popularity of these characters, but the way it's used so sweepingly as THE reason and assumed that all girls who like male characters who are considered attractive like them for that reason still sits wrong with me.

+1

OP needs to consider that just because these guys are boring to them, they're obviously not boring to everyone. Rather than another round of the woke version of "stupid fangirls," how about promoting and hyping up the characters you do like? Write fic about them! Draw art of them! Talk about why they're great and help motivate more people to make content about them!

I agree that there's no need to do a whole "woke fangirls" thing about any of this. People like what they like. However I'm also strongly skeptical that doing any of the things you recommend here is likely to actually result in any kind of meaningful change in anything. People like what they like.

AYRT

Every big fandom has at least a few people who are devoted to some secondary characters. It's not as many as the big faves and juggernaut pairings of course - and it does nothing to stop being into that (which is a futile and pointless goal anyway) but it does lead to at least a little bit more content being made about the underappreciated characters, and a few more people to enjoy talking about them with.

That's assuming OP really does want more fanwork about underrated characters and isn't just getting a self-righteousness high from judging others, of course.

Right, if you jump up and down and yell and sweat and put a ton of work into it, you might get like 3 or 4 people into your fave. It'll still be a radically different experience from someone who has shared taste with most of fandom and gets an endless fountain of content about their faves. And that sucks and is always going to suck whether your fave has 6 fans or 2 fans

No one's doing anything wrong here but it does suck.

+1000 yes this

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly they're not boring to everyone, or they wouldn't be fandom juggernauts. I get that. The annoying part is the pattern itself, not the individual choices. White guy who's a little pathetic at some point in the show, regardless of importance to the plot? ALL OVER FANDOM SPACES.

I absolutely hype up the characters I love, but to get to their content, I have to skim past so. much. of the same. fucking. guys.

I feel your pain.

Middle character is One from Stranger Things (that's the character's name, it's One)

I know, that's probably a big reason for most of the popularity of these characters,

IMO it's just so common for that to be the reason that it's probably a fair generalization for a lot of purposes. But obviously that doesn't mean that you should be a dick about it or assume that the generalization is true in all cases.

OP

I wanted to like Jaskier. I expected to like Jaskier. Alas.

I didn't mean to imply it was the only reason, just listing out ways I mentally try to be fair. And "attraction to character" has been given to me, a lesbian, as a reason why I don't understand the White Guy Fandom Darling multiple times, including on this site, so it had to be included. Obviously, it doesn't apply to everyone.

It's a common reason but far from the only one. I get attracted to characters sometimes, not always. I'm bi so it's not just men. But I never self-insert at all. It's never characters I would want to be with (lol no, I always love the absolute trainwrecks). I want that character to get railed by another character while I "watch."

Same. Not a Kylo fan and don't know who the middle one is, but Jaskier is lovely. Also he sings! And he makes friends with mice! What is not to like? And the actor did some hilarious vids during the pandemic.

I DO fnd him attractive as a man, but looks alone won't win me over for a character.
