"Though I expect there are a lot of people in fandom who don't realize how raped in this scene he was."

The amount of wankery surrounding Melly being raped, combined with the overall indifference to Paul being raped has sort of turned me off from the Dollhouse fandom. I sometimes wonder if we're all watching the same TV series.

I don't watch the show. Can someone tell me who was being raped? I thought he was raping her from the picture. Now I am a little confused

It goes like this: Paul is investigating the Dollhouse, which wipes peoples' brains, imprints them with custom personalities, and pimps them out for money. The pimping isn't always sexual, but it usually is.

The Dollhouse knows that Paul is investigating them, and sends out a doll codenamed "November," imprinted with the personality of "Mellie," to spy on him.

Someone contacts Paul through "Mellie" to tell him that Mellie is a doll. Therefore, Mellie isn't capable of informed consent, so everytime Paul has slept with her, he's been raping her.

On the other hand, the above commenter argues, Paul is being forced to sleep with Mellie (raped by the Dollhouse?) in order to preserve the illusion that he knows nothing, because to push November away would be to let the Dollhouse know that he knows that they're watching him. *head spins*

Just summarizing. Also, keep in mind that Paul isn't a particularly good guy--he has a creepy, almost sexual fixation with freeing the heroine of the show, who the show gives us no indication that he has ever met.

And almost certainly they are watching him. She was in his apartment when he wasn't there. It would be logical that someone, not necessarily her, planted some more of those cameras to spy on them.

I don't get Pauls fixation on Ecco in particular either (and not say any number of the others). I wonder if he knew her in college or something. I also don't get his relationship with Alpha. I expect that will be the big reveal in the final episode though.

It does present a conundrum: Which is worse, being forced to actively participate in something you hate doing and violates your principals, or risk your life and everything you are working for -- or not knowing that you are being used as a sexual weapon and physical threat against someone.

You can use the analogy of a third party forcing the two of them to have sex at gunpoint. The Dollhouse, which controls the woman in the scene, has implanted a personality in her that believes she's the man's girlfriend, and that the two of them do have a sexual relationship. The man only recently discovered that the woman is a fake personality, but has been informed that if he breaks her cover, the Dollhouse will use her to kill him.

This scene is the beginning of some rough, anger-laced sex, and is followed by the man in the shower, doing the classic "wash away my sins" shower scene, wracked with guilt because he has become the thing he is fighting. And the woman, who has been, essentially, a victim of the Dollhouse long before the first moment the guy laid eyes on her, is chatting away in the next room about how the sex was great, but maybe not like that every time, darling...

It's even further complicated because I suspect November actually did truly volunteer to be a doll.

My guess is that November killed her child (through abuse or neglect) and came to the dollhouse to "commit suicide" because as a catholic she couldn't physically do it. We know her daughter is dead and buried in a catholic cemetery and we know she has a police record, which she would if she was accused of killing her child. And we know, deep inside, she's still looking for her child. It would have been easy to take that self-loathing and despair and convince her that she forget the past.

And we also have no idea what the sales pitch the Dollhouse gives is like. Does it mention the uses your body may be put to at all? Additionally, November never has the chance to heal from her depression and possibly change her mind about signing up. There's no way for them to change their mind or to truly see what they've gotten themselves into.

And on Ballard's side, there's no good choice to be made. And, I suspect, a lot of anger at the Dollhouse for putting him in this impossible position, which he may be taking out on their nearest representative.

Somebody on the TWOP forums said that the Dollhouse corrupts everybody they come into contact with, even those who are not formally their clients or their victims. This is a sterling example.
