I agree to Cowboy Bebop not being an outright classic, but it was a lot of this generations first encounter with anime, so in a lot of hearts and minds, it has become a classic to many.

Does time have such significance to what is a 'classic'? I always figured that classics aren't really about the age of the material, but how influential it is on other works, as well as its current popularity.

It might not be Astro Boy or Lupin III yet, but I'd figure it's up there.

No, not really... and I do not consider Cowboy Bebop a classic, but like I said... many of the newer generation does. *shrugs* I guess because it was influential in the sense of it got a lot of people into anime.

Just like with Lupin III & Astro Boy did. :3 Though those titles deserve the title of 'classic' a lot than Cowboy Bebop does.

Like I said, it may not be at the levels of Lupin III or Astro Boy. XD I like Cowboy Bebop enough, but it's not my favorite series ever (that would be Utena).

I would argue that Cowboy Bebop has been very influential on other Anime, though, such as Samurai Champloo. I'm at a disadvantage because, honestly, the shows that I hear display the strongest Bebop influences aren't the ones I'm personally interested in. But if it's a deconstruction of the magical girl genre with fairy tale allegorical elements? I'm there.

Anyways, arguing whether or not something is a classic seems very hard to pin-down. I go by influences and popularity, though some might want to consider how often it's brought up on college reading lists. That's a bit iffy, though, because I know a prof at my U who taught Gunslinger Girl even though she did not exactly respect the material.

Very true! It's hard to really say what is and isn't classic anime and going by influences/popularity is probably the best way to go.

They were directed by the same guy IIRC, so I don't think that can really be considered "influence".

I really don't think Cowboy Bebop influenced much of anything in the anime genre. At least not yet. And I do think time is a factor in considering something a "classic," according to its definition. It's hard to serve as a model for newer stuff if you haven't been around that long.
