Fandom red flags

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
What are the top signals for you that this new fandom may not be your happy place?

Re: Fandom red flags

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Lack of rec lists/rec lists are virtue signaling
More posts about characters/storylines/creators/fans being problematic instead of squeeing

fans complaining about a ship being everywhere when you have literally not seen a single post (these same fans probably complain about age gaps)
lack of sources or original posts
everything is an au of an au of an au of an
everyone's favourite blorbo is the one who really shouldn't be the favourite

One of my fandom red flags is having fans who tell you that you picked the wrong character to be your favorite blorbo.

+1
Being control-freaky about who the fandom favorite "should" be, nah.

Not exactly a red flag, but young fan base

Re: Fandom red flags

I'd definitely prefer to be in older fandoms, but unfortunately my taste in fandom doesn't seem to align with that at the moment.

People whining about how there's too much sexual and/or dark content in any given fandom. 2022 is weird in its prude level, none of my fandoms are immune to these sniffling babies.

Re: Fandom red flags

It's attached to the cultural moral panic surrounding sex. The more people who can freely express themselves the more pushback you will get.

Reminders of purity and a need to go back to conservatism because someone is talking about a subject that makes you (the individual who is worried about too much sex/dark content) uncomfortable.

But NGL on the other side of that it feels like a similarly shame-y game when certain groups gripe on about "too much fluff" or "too much vanilla sex".

Like, I like to write cute couples falling in love more than a fucked up couple who do risky sex for thrills. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy both!!!

kamino_neko: Tedd from El Goonish Shive. Drawn by Dan Shive, coloured by Kamino Neko. (Default)

It's worse when that stuff is part of the canon.

I find equating sexual content with "dark" content in itself to be a huge problem.

Explicit sex between consenting adult characters who are having a great time is in no way "dark" even if they're doing non-consent roleplay or other controversial kinks. Sex is normal, healthy, and fun. There is nothing inherently "dark" about PWP, smut, erotica, etc. Yes, it should be tagged and rated appropriately of course, but people who have meltdowns about catching even a glimpse of it really need to work on themselves, IMO.

That's happening?? My fandom is basically one big kinkfest.

The cast or crew involved either have TOO much social media presence interacting with the fandom, or they've stepped away from social media to get away from the fandom entirely. Two extremes, both bad signs.

Re: Fandom red flags

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
I really need fans to understand that the cast is not the characters, and that actors are workers doing a job playing pretend. Any fandom stuff that equates the actors with the characters makes me deeply uncomfortable.

A headcanon has become "canon."

I mean, it's always fancops. Always. If there are too many of them, then I fuck off to greener pastures (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, bye - but then I wasn't that emotionally invested in the movies in the first place so I didn't really care to stand and fight)

Re: Fandom red flags

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Fancops" 🤣

So many of those in my current fandom. Been making my exit plan for months because of the fights that break out from "this is/is NOT OK"

People having opinions on costume choices on an adaptation of a much beloved series? Shocking.

I think it's a red flag for the fandom if you don't bitch about it enough, but keep suckling on the sweet, sweet teat of Bezos, if that's your thing /shrug

Too many complaints - criticism is fine, but if you can't enjoy over 90% of a book/show/movie/game/etc, and you have to make that point known every time you post, then it makes me wonder why you are even here?

Too horny - I expect some level of horniness but unless it's a porn anime or something, I'm not interested in seeing T&A every five minutes. I want to discuss story, characters, fic, cosplay, etc.

Too inappropriate - fans with no sense of boundaries (harassing actors, etc).

Too prudish/anti or too policing - don't need to be around folks trying to control what others enjoy, especially if it goes into awful levels of hurting real people over something fictional.

For the record, I realize that all of this sounds controlling, but if it looks like I'm just not going to get along in a fandom, I just nope out. I'm not interested in forcing folks to see things my way.

Good lord, this. It makes it so hard to have an actual conversation about the show/characters/etc., because all those kinds of people want to do is just beat their usual dead horses and bitch about everything. Seriously, we got the point the first twenty times you whined about x, y, z in canon, people, move the fuck on already.

It also sucks the fun out of any positive comments those who are still enjoying the canon. It's tough trying to keep some positive balance when everyone else just wants to gripe all day about canon.

If people are going on and on about antis, or prudes, then this is probably not going to be a good place to be. Sorry I'm not as horny as you.

Re: Fandom red flags

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If you are very bothered about people complaining about antis, chances are high you are an anti.
