Notes:

I've just been deleting a lot of random secrets that are recycling ancient FS memes ("can't unsee these unrelated pictures, would hit random thing, I wish this scene had ended in 'hot non-con sex'") and one person that makes a different secret about a certain actor every week trying to be as wacky as possible.

What are the female characters at court doing (or not doing) that GRRM's not getting?

OP

in the book the only female characters not part of the main family even mentioned are the strong girls, and they are part of rhaenyra's attendants. they're basically her best friends. if grrm cared about court, we'd at least know who they married and how that connected to who supported rhaenyra, but they basically disappear when the other strongs do. alicent's faction is mentioned as being comprised solely of men (and we don't know who they are either and how that connects to who supports the greens) and that's just insane.

in the show, rhaenyra and alicent keep saying that people are gossiping about rhaenyra's kids. but....we never see this or how this affect rhaenyra or alicent. rhaenyra's on the small council and nobody undercuts her but alicent and I'm supposed to believe the rumors are having some effect on her station by non-alicent people? what?

That's an excellent point, thank you!

Admittedly I don't know the purpose of the royal court and would like an explanation.

a royal court is essentially a way to keep nobles from starting rebellions by giving them honor and access to power. this is true of men and women. you can tell the political leanings of the monarch and the monarch's children by who they have closest to them at court. from a historical perspective, you can tell how monarchs made decisions by who they rose to honor and who they demoted, before the decisions were made. many alliances happen amongst people in the royal court. because women rarely were able to wield power openly, being in court gave them a manner of doing so, even if it was on behalf of their family. furthermore, you can tell by the marriages happening, which were often arranged by courting at court, what was happening

so in a conflict of succession, you should have other people, especially women, interacting with alicent and rhaenyra to demonstrate how the noble world outside alicent and rhaenyra view things. you should know who married who and how this would help or hurt their cause. in both the book and the show "rumors" are flying, but the red keep might as well be empty lol.

A lot was lost to the time skips. I would have liked to see her friendship with Rhaenyra.

yeah, I think that was the worst loss.

Thanks for making my secret and using the best picture of laena and daemon they have.

I mean, *you* might believe that is the purpose of their show, but I think they just want to speedrun through all this and get to the draconic civil war bits. I'd wager that and all the soap opera stuff is what most of the mainstream audience want to see, if a random sampling of episode comments online are anything to go by.

And I get the frustration here. I thought GoT was at its best in the earlier seasons not just because they still gave a shit back then but also due to how the show focused on the human drama and intrigue... but most other viewers seemed to believe that was getting in the way of dragons/ice zombies plot.

i hear you but the creators explicitly mentioned that they wanted to ~talk about women in power~ and they're barely doing that and only then individually and psychologically. I like the soap opera parts too! but like Marie Antoinette managed court in a soapy way! it's possible!

and I agree with you about GOT.
