Notes:

I've just been deleting a lot of random secrets that are recycling ancient FS memes ("can't unsee these unrelated pictures, would hit random thing, I wish this scene had ended in 'hot non-con sex'") and one person that makes a different secret about a certain actor every week trying to be as wacky as possible.

I agree that fic under 2500 words is pointless. I guess at the end of the day that's people's prerogative if they wanna write it, but it is pointless.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
What are short stories and flash fiction? We just don't know.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
At best, random scenes. At best.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
And a complete, self-contained scene that offer's a moment's insight into a character is... what? Valid at 2,501 words, worthless at 2,499?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
A complete, self-contained scene that offers a moment's insight into a character below 2500 words is vanishingly rare, that's what it is.

ayrt

something longer than 2500 words can still be a short story and, yeah, honestly I do find flash fiction pointless in general

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I find your comment pointless in general.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Flash fic is just the new name for crack fic.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Crack fic can be any length

(Anonymous) 2022-10-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Flash fic is a pretty old literary term that didn't originate with fanfic.

Not even close

I write very short fic and some people read it and enjoy it. That's it. That's the entire "point."

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
well you don't have to read it.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think it's pointless so I don't read it. That's exactly the state of affairs.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol hope you run out of things to read.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, pointless, just like all human endeavour!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I...kinda agree. I get that writing shorter works takes a lot of skill, but I sometimes think this pushes writers to write stories that are short just to brag about how short they are. This one-upmanship (plus seriously declining attention spans across many Western demographics) has made me turn away from nearly short form fic (not just fanfic).

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*nearly all

Fuck.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s not remotely what writing short-form fic is about for the majority of writers, though.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Given what I've seen both in creative writing coursesb Writer's Digest articles; and various online writing sites, I'm inclined to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve also been in creative writing circles, but I’m not involved in Writer’s Digest articles. My anecdotal evidence of most people writing short-form because they love the craft and aren’t trying to one-up everyone else is still valid regardless of that last fact. As is your anecdotal evidence of the contrary. We can agree to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If anything, it's the opposite, writers one-upping each other trying to see who can publish the most indulgent and unnecessarily lengthy book. So many published novels are 1000+ pages with maybe enough story to fill half of that. Maybe these people should go back to writing exercises that force them to keep things short so they can learn some self-control.

AYRT

Really? Novels are an increasingly rare part of the discussion in the few writing circles I'm active in, anymore, and there are fewer markets for longer fiction. It's one of the (many) reasons I decided to not pursue a writing career.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-16 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol and what circles are these? An MFA program? The hell are you talking about there being no markets for longer fiction? Novels or preferably *series* of related novels are about the only things with a chance out here.

Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart is 2100 words. I am utterly confused by this secret.
