I've just been deleting a lot of random secrets that are recycling ancient FS memes ("can't unsee these unrelated pictures, would hit random thing, I wish this scene had ended in 'hot non-con sex'") and one person that makes a different secret about a certain actor every week trying to be as wacky as possible.

No one on AO3 is Guy de Maupassant or Herman Melville

That’s not the point of their reply, and you know it.

In Maupassant's case, that's quite a relief.

I used to be a literature major and I still can't find anything nice to say about Maupassant's writing except for the fact that I didn't completely hate Une Vie and that Le Horla was kinda interesting. I still believe that his writing is boring and drab, and I would maybe even prefer reading Victor Hugo over him even though I can't stand Victor Hugo's inability not to preach at his readers about his values. Les Contemplations is still good French poetry though.

I like Maupassant but there are some other "classics" I find really overrated.

ayrt

No, of course not, they are both fucking dead.

But if you mean that no one that is posting or has posted on AO3 could write a famous short story, prove it.

My point, though, was the secret poster seems to think that writers posting fanfic should adhere to a publication standard which clearly does not exist.

There are literally published writers on AO3?? And honestly, there are people who are just as good and not interested in pursuing traditional publishing because it's a hobby for them. Yeah, there's a lot of bad fic, but there's also fic that's a lot better than Melville and de Maupassant.

Which fic is better than the works of Herman Melville
