Notes:

I've just been deleting a lot of random secrets that are recycling ancient FS memes ("can't unsee these unrelated pictures, would hit random thing, I wish this scene had ended in 'hot non-con sex'") and one person that makes a different secret about a certain actor every week trying to be as wacky as possible.

Or you can just not be homophobic? (Because I can't see another reason for calling out slash specifically.)

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
See, you're sort of hair trigger reactions are exactly what we're talking about. Can you just not. Please. Take it down a couple of notches.

Your*

But seriously, why be all "I don't like shipping" and then whine about only slash? If they're against shipping, then why not call out het too?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
All shipping is slash. Not all slash is LGBT+.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No. No, it's not.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLOLOL NO. Not even close....

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, they are correct. You are incorrect.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, you are.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No aren't. You don't know fandom history at all.

AYRT

I was there Gandolf.... You can't gaslight me into thinking I've been wrong about my almost 30 years of personal experience in fandom. Slash has meant gay since the 70s. I have PERSONAL experience with this since the 90s. Fandom young'uns need to sit down and shut the fuck up and learn from their elders. We built all of this that you're enjoying and we're not gonna let you fuck it up with your ignorance.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it is not. Not even close.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This is factually incorrect. Slash is M/M. I'm not sure where you were taught otherwise, but you were misinformed.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
except... that anon never said YOU had to ship or enjoy shipping, nor would I call their reaction 'hair trigger'. They just pointed out that your wording was hurtful.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
SA

"Some of us just want to enjoy non-slash stuff too"

Missed this before, and I'm even more baffled. Can you not enjoy het then? Or are you under the impression that only slash counts as shipping or something?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
They're probably just old. 'Slash' originally just meant 'Character/Character,' (aka, Character 'slash' Character) and became shorthand for gay ships because, like, 95% of the developed characters in most media up until a few years ago were men and all the canon relationships were het and usually just tagged as canon compliant. People used to only consider themselves shippers if they were actually emotionally invested in one particular relationship.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I've been in fandom since the late 90s, and I feel like I've read a decent amount of stuff about the origins of terms and things that started before then, and I've literally never heard that definition. Slash has ALWAYS meant gay ships as far as I've seen. Weird.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they're probably VERY new to fandom. I've been in fandom since the early 90s and slash has always meant gay.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a marker of your relative ignorance then, because it is not the truth. Slash does not mean just gay, and it never has. Maybe a very brief period in the sixties and seventies, but by the time of the Eternal September it had already turned its meaning to encompass all relationshipping fics.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, you're wrong. MAYBE there was a time when slash included all ships, but currently it absolutely does not.

Oh you sweet summer child. It's always been gay.

“That is a marker of your relative ignorance then, because it is not the truth”

The lack of self-awareness lol

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT.

You need to go learn our history before you spout off about things you know nothing about. I've been in slash fandom since the 90s. IT'S ALWAYS BEEN GAY.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Slash started with Kirk/Spock shipping back in the 'seventies, where it was called slash because of the slash between the names, and it referred to m/m pairings.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-15 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No. That has never been the case outside of a few communities trying to reinvent the wheel.
