The thing I hate about Star Trek Prodigy is that its premise is that Janeway lost yet another ship in a far off part of the galaxy. What was the conversation in Starfleet when that happened? "Hey, ya hear about Kathy Janeway's special new project?" "Yeah, we even gave her a desk job and she still lost the ship" "Women drivers, amirite?". It turns Trek's first female captain into a running gag.

Janeway wasn't even the first female captain. There were several of them in Next Gen before Voyager existed.

Oh, you mean like the one in Conspiracy who got her ship blown up because she was hoodwinked by the conspiracy? Or Geordi's mom, who lost her ship in space? Or the one at the start of Star Trek IV who had her ship disabled by the whale probe? Oooh, I know, "Captain" Saavik from Wrath of Khan, starting her career being shown as getting everyone obliterated in the Kobyashi Maru? Or Captain Louvois, who was a desk jockey who tried to take away Data's sapient rights in Measure of a Man? Or Captain Garret, who was briefly in command of the Enterprise-C but who died off-screen before even their big self sacrifice? Or Captain Benteen, who was part of the Evil Conspiracy to enact a coup d'etat on the Federation in Deep Space Nine? Yeah, Trek really did well with all of those. Really, really, really, well.

But also, they were not main characters like Janeway was.

Yeah. They don't count. Everybody knows that if you are the guest Captain in Star Trek then you are either the mystery needing solved, needing rescued, or the idiot from Admiralty who is there to be the conflict in the episode and probably be beaten like a redheaded stepchild.

I get your point but I feel like the Kobayashi Maru example is kind of missing the point a bit

That is how she is introduced, losing her ship.

We don't learn a damn thing about it until well after that.

But she’s still a protagonist of the show she appears in, while the others aren’t. That’s what the others are trying to say I think, not that Janeway never messed up.
