What is a tankie in this context? Last I heard the word used it was either to refer to a soldier in an armoured regiment or a type of sleeveless shirt.

Militant leftist. Usually American, the kind of person who yells at people from actual former Soviet countries for bringing up their negative experiences.

I've never seen any of my communist friends yell at those people, but one did say once that the only reason those people's voices get amplified is for propaganda and that we should listen to the equal or greater number of people from former Soviet countries who wish they could go back to that life.

Communism vs. where I stand on the political scale puts me at a "we can agree to disagree and still be friends" standpoint with my friends, but I still wish I'd said you know real people's experiences aren't propaganda and you know that if we became communist, there would be people who want to go back to capitalism, you know that right? "I liked it because I wasn't one of the ones who suffered very much under it" is a fairly normal way of looking at any political system you grew up with, I would think.

I love those people. Especially since a LOT of those who wish for/demand a communist state would be the first to get a one-way ticket to the gulag.

I've seen such hilariously dumb takes from these people, shit like "I long for the communist state in which I would be an author who lives in a little cottage just doing my thing" and... no hun, you'd be working the fields or in a factory, maybe some office job if you're lucky, and would be living in a tiny aparment that you get assigned to, and if you don't like it, well tough.
