It's happened to me a number of times. Although in general I've somehow been lucky enough to get involved in a fandom at the right time -- before fan interest peaks, or right in the middle of the influx of new fans, or after the height of the party but still long before the source material ends.

As an old fan in a lot of fandoms where probably most people have moved on, I would LOVE to see new fans, new fanworks, new discussions, etc. And I'm sure there are others like me.

So don't be afraid to contribute, because your stuff just might rekindle interest and jumpstart something. You could cause some new fans to get more involved, encourage those who left to come back, and inspire old fans to be as active as they once were.
