Question (because I'm still trying to figure out your thoughts on the restriction of "fannish negativity"):
If I were to hypothetically argue that Maiko was OOC in about a thousand ways for Zuko based on his character for two seasons (I'm not making that argument, btw), that hooking up with a girl uninterested and unempathetic toward others was out of character for such passionate idealist, Would you consider the expression of my opinion negative, disruptive, and serving no purpose?
(For the record, I see nothing wrong with you expressing your thoughts.)

You could argue that you feel the character was inconsistent in some ways if you wanted to, and if you could find a way to do so that wasn't overly hostile in tone, whatever, that's your prerogative and I've certainly given you an opening to do so. But I would probably not be interested in having that "debate" with you as it seems kind of pointless to me personally.
I'd maybe have more to say about how I wish Zuko's romantic life have been more solidly integrated into the final few episodes of the show, but that's just nitpicking, really, and I'd rather just enjoy what's there than complain about what wasn't.
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, as I don't think I actually expressed a particularly negative opinion, and deliberately worded my comment not to mention fanon pairings.

It was partly a point being made, partly a request for clarification, because I am making an attempt to see your POV. But I've noticed that your standard of what are acceptable topics for criticism and what are unacceptably negative topics for criticism seems to shift depending on your feelings for the subject.
I would say that while it may not be to your taste, the actions of characters in canon are by definition not OOC, because the canon is what tells us what's IC or not to begin with.
Defining it technically, you have a point. I based my hypothetical argument on Zuko's character as presented during the first two seasons. But I think it is possible for a character to go OOC in canon. Or maybe I'm just using OOC as sloppy shorthand for inconsistent characterization.
