This! If you're immersed in the movie and focused on Ofelia's viewpoint, then the way the scene is paced, scored, etc is extremely tense, and the Pale Man himself is very much Hitchcock's "Show the bomb before it goes off" there's so much stillness when she's trying not to *breathe* but still sneaking around in its lair. And the realism of the physical acting from Doug Jones and Ofelia's actress really sells the danger she's in.
