Your comparison with One Piece is super interesting to me, because to me it's the other way around: I find One Piece far more compelling both in terms of story beats as well as character work. One of the reasons for that is BECAUSE the story is always moving forward and the characters always growing. Which is something I miss in Detective Conan. There will be some very interesting things happening during one case and then all character growth and consequences seem to be be reset when the next story starts. (Like the elevator scene with Takagi during the bombing case - has that ever been resolved? As far as I remember that was just completely dropped.)

I will reread the series once it's finished though. I like it and I do reread some cases every now and then. Mostly the Kaito Kid stories and cases where Heiji shows up, because I'm basic like that.
