i still don't understand why it's acceptable for people to be obsessed with sports, spend hours watching them and thousands of dollars on year round game tickets, memorize countless dates/scores/etc, wear and/or paint themselves in team colors and go on and on and on about it in public while people who talk a lot about a tv series or anime get shat on for being obsessed nerds, and by other nerds even.

why is one thing considered an obsession while the other is considered a totally normal hobby (even though sports fans are more likely to cause serious damage or even injury to others when their team loses)?

Meanwhile I genuinely don't know what circles y'all run in that you are getting shit for being a geek. Literally everyone in my life knows I read and occasionally write fanfic. I bring up my fannishness just as much as I bring up other interests that I have. And when I socialize at work (which is often, due to the nature of my job) it's usually in the form of geeking out about media.

I'm not saying you aren't getting shit for being a geek--just that this appears to be very specific to the individual and their social circle. Because in my experience, it's actually the sports fans and other people with interests that are perceived as normative who are more likely to have to endure jokes and dismissive eyerolls at their expense.

I think your experience depends on what kind of person you are.
I was pretty out in the open about my geeky obsessions in highschool and was never bullied because of it. I think most geeks like to think they were bullied because they liked weird shit, because it's easier than accepting they were bullied because they were a shy weirdo with few to no friends, which made them an easy target for assholes.
