I agree that the snappy takedown and quick, dismissive takes are highly valued in internet culture generally, but that seems to be more the professional and semi-professional side of things, not fandom as such. For every YouTuber who wants to talk about "this one dumb thing about this show you like" there's ten people elsewhere writing passionate meta or meta-based fanfic about it.

Some people enjoy hatewatching, it's not my thing, but whatever. Plus, some people just like viewing/reading/listening to media critically, it doesn't necessarily mean they dislike everything about the media. And I don't have anything against someone disliking something because it doesn't make sense to them.

Yeah, some people do want things spoon-fed to them and complain when something has the least bit of complexity, but, on the other hand, some things are opaque in their 'artistry'.

It is purity culture though. Everything needs to be binary, black or white, good or bad. If there's any art or nuance, then it must be bad because it's not "pure".

Could not disagree with you more. You are simply hanging around the wrong people, half of the people I know love art that is insanely arty and over my head.

The people that you see that are like what you're describing I'd argue are also not new. That's just how most people engage with media and fandom has only grown wider, so that's probably why it seems that way to you.

I think there are a lot of people who feel like they aren't allowed to ever be "wrong", so with things like artistic interpretation where a lot of different ideas can exist alongside each other it feels a bit scary and they try to protect themselves by making fun of anything outside of their ideas or the ideas of the group that they're in. Hopefully it's the sort of thing that most people mature out of, but I guess it's also hard to step outside of what you feel is the safe thing.

I agree with every word, OP. I love all the behind the scenes, making-of footage the LOTR trilogy had, the camaraderie was heart warming and the whole design process was really interesting to watch. I don't know of any other films that had the same level of care and detail put into them and that's a damn shame.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I wish the Hobbit films had had as much time and care invested into them as the original LOTR. I had such high hopes and frankly, I'm still disappointed about how they turned out. They're not even great popcorn flicks, IMO.

I love it, I think critics love it for the wrong reasons, but then I get over myself and remember there's no wrong reason to love something.

It's not supposed to be as deep as the critics think (even Kodaka himself said so) but you can make a case for it having more of a message than it was supposed to and dissect the possibilities of how much of the "true story" revealed at the end was actually true (again, Kodaka said there is no right or wrong answer) and that's valid. I just think it's lots of fun, in large part because I love mindfucks.

I love Sarah Z's videos, she's one of my favourite youtubers, but I do agree with you on this in general. It's long bugged me that the majority of progressive youtube video essayists, who are so careful to include the issues of every marginalized group they can think of in their videos, still rarely think of how things impact autistic people or other disabled folk. We're totally bloody invisible to them.

I find the romance part is inevitably the worst part of any cdrama, period. I'd be happy if they just left it out EVERY plot, or at least toned it down so it wasn't the main focus. That's mostly because cdrama romances have so many unpleasantly toxic tropes that I get super annoyed pretty quickly.

The BL adaptations have been among my favorites. Either they turn it into bromance friendship, or they're forced to be less explicit about it and frankly, I enjoy that more.
