Sarah Z is into a weird kind of exoticism. It’s not exactly point-and-laugh, but it definitely exaggerates how “different” the people she discusses are from her, even though she’d probably seem exactly as weird to people who don’t use Tumblr.

She starts off practically every video with some kind of "this was literally me y'all" statement and then spends the rest of it acting like she's Jane Goodall observing the chimps. She totally lost me with that pro/anti shipper video where she acted like she was above all this fandom nonsense because she was an "adult who pays taxes"..... Bitch, you pay those taxes with money you make talking about all this fandom nonsense. She is in some perpetual wanting my cake but eating it situation in that she wants to seem like someone with firsthand knowledge of fandom topics but also a more serious academic who doesn't engage with properties and fan culture the way hoi polloi do.

And as a chimp I do not appreciate her takes. She thinks my smiles are friendly but really I'm showing my teeth.

There are people with more interesting and authentic takes (Jenny Nicholes comes first to mind) but at this point I'm ready for SZ to make a video about hating A03 or something. I just hate how influential she is in her bias.

I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with anything you’re saying, but using “hating AO3” as an example of something she’ll do is a bit weird considering she’s been open about liking AO3 and writing fic there.

AYART: I didn't know that and also I don't care. It's a big hot button topic in the Purity Culture Wars so I use "hating AO3" as an eventual landmark on the "Look at these weirdos, Hahah I'm so adult and also normal and relatable" path.
