I agree with every word, OP. I love all the behind the scenes, making-of footage the LOTR trilogy had, the camaraderie was heart warming and the whole design process was really interesting to watch. I don't know of any other films that had the same level of care and detail put into them and that's a damn shame.

Maybe I'm being unfair, but I wish the Hobbit films had had as much time and care invested into them as the original LOTR. I had such high hopes and frankly, I'm still disappointed about how they turned out. They're not even great popcorn flicks, IMO.

Yes, I agree with all this. Also The Hobbit films were severely scuppered by numerous stupid decisions by the studio.

I don't know the full details, but it sounded like it, yeah. Too much time spent waffling about who's going to direct, and IMO too little time spent where it matters and where it really paid off in the LOTR films - planning, designing and attention to detail. I recall something about choosing to film with different cameras for... Reasons? Was it so it could be shown in 3d? Anyway, I don't think it looked as good on the big screen as the LOTR movies did, which is nuts given the amount of time that's passed since then.

Yup. Peter Jackson has said as much in several interviews. He wanted to make them great. Maybe they wouldn't have been LOTR-level, but he could have made them good. But the studio forced his hand in numerous ways and just messed things up. I'll still occasionally watch and enjoy them, but they just aren't good.

I'll admit it's been a while since I watched the behind the scenes stuff, but as I recall, everyone got along really well? Like, the Hobbits are friends IRL, and Sirs Ian and Christopher spoke highly of their younger cast members. That energy is important to making something really good. If everyone's fighting, it's gonna throw things off.

I don't mean that people didn't get along, but... it wasn't quite the same, IIRC. McKellan in particular had a hard time doing so much filming by himself in front of a green screen that he got rather depressed. I didn't get the same sense that people felt they were a big family, working on an underdog sort of project together.

they were talking about the differences between the original trilogy and the hobbit trilogy (where most of the cast were middle aged actors playing dwarves?) we know the hobbits are all still friends IRL and the Sirs loved everyone in the original trilogy but the sequel/prequels had none of that energy even if the cast didn't actively fight.
