Yes, I agree with all this. Also The Hobbit films were severely scuppered by numerous stupid decisions by the studio.

I don't know the full details, but it sounded like it, yeah. Too much time spent waffling about who's going to direct, and IMO too little time spent where it matters and where it really paid off in the LOTR films - planning, designing and attention to detail. I recall something about choosing to film with different cameras for... Reasons? Was it so it could be shown in 3d? Anyway, I don't think it looked as good on the big screen as the LOTR movies did, which is nuts given the amount of time that's passed since then.

Yup. Peter Jackson has said as much in several interviews. He wanted to make them great. Maybe they wouldn't have been LOTR-level, but he could have made them good. But the studio forced his hand in numerous ways and just messed things up. I'll still occasionally watch and enjoy them, but they just aren't good.
