I think there are a lot of people who feel like they aren't allowed to ever be "wrong", so with things like artistic interpretation where a lot of different ideas can exist alongside each other it feels a bit scary and they try to protect themselves by making fun of anything outside of their ideas or the ideas of the group that they're in. Hopefully it's the sort of thing that most people mature out of, but I guess it's also hard to step outside of what you feel is the safe thing.
