That’s not quite right imo. Purity culture is a problem, and surface level only approaches to art that has nuance is a pain. But those are mostly separate issues in my experience. I don’t think most of the people who oversimplify art that may be complex and meaningful under the surface with shallow takes and nitpicking are doing so because complexity is “impure”. That they’re purposely doing so because they find complexity and nuance offensive and a wrong that must be righted. Some art might have themes that are dark and uncomfortable, and that is where some people may be taking the intent of the art in bad faith out of purity culture. Not because of the depth and nuance of the art, but because they assume the dark themes to be something the artist is promoting or exploiting.

This is all just my opinion on this though, like I said.

I grew up with them too, and I still don’t agree. Both purity culture and anti-intellectualism aren’t new concepts, and they certainly have some overlap. But that doesn’t mean they’re one in the same.
