Sorry for the late reply. I don't have much insight because I don't have a degree in the field. I'm just a minimum-wage part-timer trying to keep the place neat and organized. I can however tell you that town hall has been seriously underfunding us and we've recently had some major cuts to staff hours when what we really need is more staff. The town has been earning more money each year, but still allocating the same amount to the library. And since the first question I got when I told some other people about this was "do you live in a red area?", no, it's very blue around here. So...if other towns and cities are like mine, be prepared to get shafted.

Thanks for responding (and keeping the library together!).

I feel like libraries (along with education/arts in schools or in general) always get the first cuts. Which is BS as it's supposed to be a resource for the people who live in that community, but damn. I hope there's some change for you there, maybe some community organizers or a local PTA, some folks get to get her to adjust the budget (I know where I'm at, if you can get on the community board, specifically the budgeting committee, you get a chance to not only see where and how the money is being spent but also get a say in allocation. But I don't have the time to join ATM -- do you have something similar in your town?).
