I didn't like it because I thought it wasn't a very good movie, especially the first half of it. I thought the action scenes were quite bad and the plot was not compelling.

It's a shame that all discussions about the MCU are apparently so overdetermined that you can't talk about disliking the movie without getting drawn into a million (largely pointless) arguments about the supposed political significance of the movies, or people talking about the commercial success of the movies as though that has anything to do with their quality from a creative point of view. It's exhausting and pointless.

^100%

The movie bored the shit out of me before I even got to a point where it was, in theory, Problematic.

I don’t know much about this movie, but Overwatch 2 proves it’s entirely possible to be woke and racist at the same time.

I haven’t heard about that, what happened?

(I can also just look it up myself if you would prefer that)

There’s been a lot of talk about Orientalism in relation to Kiriko. I’m not finding any really good articles about that, though.

There’s also some controversy related to Soldier 76’s conflict with Sojourn, but I don’t know as much about that.

Ah, that does make sense. Thanks!

It totally can be both.
I don't care about the movie either way

(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It.... it can be both.... Just because a person is woke about one thing, doesn't mean they're automatically woke about everything....

(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes. Because of course Marvel movies only have 1 (one) flaw, and that single flaw must be agreed upon by everybody who wishes to criticise the movie.

That seems like two unrelated groups of complainers, though. I mean, it seems pretty on brand that people who complain about wokeness won't have a problem with a baby-crazy woman as a villain.

Whereas people who complain about baby-crazy women as villains are probably fine with female POC heroes and lesbian moms.

This is the obvious answer, yup.

I just hate marvel movies because of how boring and unenjoyable they have become.
The last one I genuinely enjoyed was black panther and before that it was winter soldier. I don't care if they do or don't have 'woke' themes in it (whatever the fuck that even means any more since the majority of said woke themes are probably easy to edit out in other countries if they're too controversial - and therefore not that essential to the plot) - but with how many rely on you watching the sixty other marvel films in order to get what's going on, I just can't be bothered to see them any more.
