I'm not a popular writer but I think I have at least one or two readers who like my fics enough to read most of them. It's not enough to make me want to put myself out there to ask for tips like kofi or patreon or something like that...but I think it's wonderful that people can make money off it tbh

If you are making money off your fanwork, then stop it right now. Fanworks exist only as long as nobody is diluting intellectual property by even appearing to make money off them. Even AO3 is strict on this one. You're risking ruining things for everybody.

As you can see, some people do still have strong feelings against monetizing fanfic. (These feelings are not based entirely in reality, but that's not what we were talking about :p)

The main change is that this stance is no longer universal. Fanfic is no longer seen as legally risky in and of itself, so the question of whether and how much it's okay to make money off it is now possible to seriously discuss.

...Yeah, it's weird, I actually have had a couple people ask if I have a kofi and I'm like... I don't object if other people do really, but the idea of me doing it just gives me this visceral "eek wtf no" since I grew up (figuratively) with the idea that making money in any way off of fanfic is bad.

I kind of wish I could get over that.

I think a lot of greedy fic writers are going to be in for a very rude awakening when TPTB do eventually decide to sue. Fanfic is still a legal gray area.

I frankly don't hate the idea of kofi as long as it continues to exist in a great area where you could just be giving someone money for "coffee", and it's just a coincidence that that person also writes fanfic you like.

But I don't like that it's hard to be anonymous through patreon/kofi's payment systems, as far as I understand it.

As far as regret that you weren't making money off your fanworks back then goes, I don't think it's a good thing that people are relying on selling their fanworks to support themselves.

Ren faires have always had multiple groups in them, from the strict, supposed anyway, period accurate folks, all the way to the guy in jeggings and Spock ears calling himself Legs-and-Ass, and all of them having a good time and not gatekeeping.

I must admit, I prefer longfics. That way I get to spend more time with all the characters and worlds that I love. Fanfic: I'm in it for a longtime, not just a good time.

The thing of it is, Coppola's Dracula isn't a traditional adaptation. It's a period adaptation, absolutely, but it also took huge liberties with the plot (the Mina reincarnation romance, to name the big one). It was the fresh new interpretation of its day. I would LOVE an actual true adaptation of the novel, but this ... wasn't it.

It was, however, an absolutely gorgeous movie on a visual level, absolutely. The costuming and cinematography are stunning.

I didn't like it because I thought it wasn't a very good movie, especially the first half of it. I thought the action scenes were quite bad and the plot was not compelling.

It's a shame that all discussions about the MCU are apparently so overdetermined that you can't talk about disliking the movie without getting drawn into a million (largely pointless) arguments about the supposed political significance of the movies, or people talking about the commercial success of the movies as though that has anything to do with their quality from a creative point of view. It's exhausting and pointless.
