Rarely were they burned in England, burning witches was more a Scottish thing. And there were a few places on the continent too. But it was never as widespread as some people seem to think. I strongly suspect, but have no way of proving, that if someone did claim to be a hyperactive fairy or elf, then, depending on their family reputation and how else they interacted with their community, then most people would either simply consider them the village weirdo to be quietly ignored/tolerated to being declared insane and carted off to whatever the period's place for the insane was. Skipping right to the barbecue, I suspect would be the exception rather than rule, that seems a rather inhuman reaction. I don't think basic human empathy or laziness has changed all that much.
