Ren faires have always had multiple groups in them, from the strict, supposed anyway, period accurate folks, all the way to the guy in jeggings and Spock ears calling himself Legs-and-Ass, and all of them having a good time and not gatekeeping.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And the guy dressed as Deadpool? There is always one, you know.

And people dressed as Dr Who villains.

This. Ren faires are not the SCA, though the SCA may often have a hand in putting them together. They are well aware that when you invite in people who are not actually history buffs or recreationists, accuracy will go out the door.

But as long as you're not uptight about that, everyone will have a good time anyway!

Because the person talking about “burning witches” knows so much about real life in that time period.

LOL. I mean, I get where you're coming from a bit, I'd prefer the majority of people be in pseudo-historical gear rather than anime aliens or whatever. But c'mon, look how happy the woman in that picture looks! It's lovely!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Because ren-faire screams historical accuracy?! Please

(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I agree some people go too far in the dressing up as total fantasy creatures. I prefer when Ren Faire has specific "fae days" for the people who want to be fairies etc.

just assume it's "ren faire time period" actor going too hard at a masquerade they were hired for or they're embodying what "ren faire time period" creatures people really did think existed, because they did or they're cosplaying those weird hybrids on illuminated manuscripts and chill.

You sound exactly like the type of gate keeping jerk who makes entering nerdy/gerky spaces a Russian roulette game of 'will I be bullied today for engaging in our shared interest the 'wrong' way?'

Let the fairies be fairies anon!

Strong opinions, OP!

The RenFaires around me are pretty open, and one of them even has themed weekends!

If you think people in the Renaissance and Middle Ages never dressed up as fairies, demons, and witches at festivals, you don't know history as well as you think you do.

Your use of tense, "they didn't fricking exist," kind of suggests they didn't exist then, but do now. lol.

Ren faires are kinda the exact opposite of historically accurate. They're just fairs like any other, with their own theme/vibe. You want historical accuracy, you should look more toward SCA or your local reenacting groups.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
you definitely seem like a super fun person to spend these events with.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
As somebody who works part time at a faire near me...you realize that practically no one outside of the cast and some very dedicated festival-goers are actually in period clothing, right?

The stuff commonly thought of as "faire garb" is....not really all that accurate.

It's really not a big deal. Why not complain about the people wearing t-shirts and shorts while you're at it?

What's with this bitter as fuck secret? Was OP burned at the stake in their past life?

Darling, I think you need to cleanse your chakras of the dark, dense ectoplasm weighing them down. Take in a long, deep, breath and close your eyes... breathe out slowly while you picture the dancing Ren Fairies. Picture their sparkly white light as you breathe in deeply and hold. Let the white fairy light flow through you, as you slowly breathe out again. Repeat, until the stick makes its way out of your ass.

I think people who wear big wings (bigger than the one in the secret picture though) and similar big accessories as part of their Renfaire costumes suck but that's because I can't stand people being inconsiderate enough to wear overly space-consuming stuff in crowded places.

I'm just reminded of Janeane Garofalo in "The Cable Guy" XD

If it was as strict as you want it to be, I'd just assume it would be boring and simply go to the fair that wasn't so anal about costuming.

I find it way less weird and more in keeping with the historical-but-also-semi-fantasy theme than the people in storm trooper armor, but at the end of the day I don't care. Most of the people in more straightforward historical garb arent being that historically accurate about it (except, I guess, the employees dressed as nobles) and everything really just has a "ye olde" veneer rather than being an educational historical reenactment site. As long as everyone is having fun, its fine (even if my personal preference is not to feel like I wandered into an outdoor sci-fi con with anime cosplayers and someone dressed as the Joker).
