The parts of The Simpsons that are universal cultural referents are also the parts that are good. And there's no law saying that something has to stagger on for 20 years after it stops being good just because it's a universal cultural referent, and plenty of things go on like zombies long after they've stopped being good now that we no longer live in a monoculture anyway.

No, this is true. I just fear that if something would be equally appealing and culturally defining, they would once again milk it to the last drop.
