I'm kind of not. I like The Simpsons in the beginning but that show has been on life support for YEARS AND YEARS after it should have died. So, kinda happy that it looks like there won't be a repeat of that.

The parts of The Simpsons that are universal cultural referents are also the parts that are good. And there's no law saying that something has to stagger on for 20 years after it stops being good just because it's a universal cultural referent, and plenty of things go on like zombies long after they've stopped being good now that we no longer live in a monoculture anyway.

No, this is true. I just fear that if something would be equally appealing and culturally defining, they would once again milk it to the last drop.

yeah, that's fair, that's definitely a sadly realistic possibility

I've seen people saying some of the latest episodes are a recovery of sorts (while not reaching the heights) but I just can't be bothered anymore. I know I sound like a fandom old who's stuck in her ways but I just can't believe the difference in quality when I watch episodes from the heyday. It's like...every gag is a hit, and a hit that gets to the target with top tier precision.

When I stopped watching the show regularly (around the time of the film) it felt like it was a vehicle for celebrity cameos that didn't even bother to fit with the plot like they used to. I mean, I know the [named] celebrity rot set in a lot earlier and I did prefer when they were playing a different character, even if it was an expy of themselves, but it certainly got much worse.

I've heard that it's been a zombie so long that the people making it suck have all retired and it's starting to get legitimately good again.

No idea if this is actually true or not; I can't be assed figuring out a way to watch the show when I don't even have a TV.
