I'm kind of not. I like The Simpsons in the beginning but that show has been on life support for YEARS AND YEARS after it should have died. So, kinda happy that it looks like there won't be a repeat of that.

The parts of The Simpsons that are universal cultural referents are also the parts that are good. And there's no law saying that something has to stagger on for 20 years after it stops being good just because it's a universal cultural referent, and plenty of things go on like zombies long after they've stopped being good now that we no longer live in a monoculture anyway.

No, this is true. I just fear that if something would be equally appealing and culturally defining, they would once again milk it to the last drop.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's fair, that's definitely a sadly realistic possibility

I've seen people saying some of the latest episodes are a recovery of sorts (while not reaching the heights) but I just can't be bothered anymore. I know I sound like a fandom old who's stuck in her ways but I just can't believe the difference in quality when I watch episodes from the heyday. It's like...every gag is a hit, and a hit that gets to the target with top tier precision.

When I stopped watching the show regularly (around the time of the film) it felt like it was a vehicle for celebrity cameos that didn't even bother to fit with the plot like they used to. I mean, I know the [named] celebrity rot set in a lot earlier and I did prefer when they were playing a different character, even if it was an expy of themselves, but it certainly got much worse.

I've heard that it's been a zombie so long that the people making it suck have all retired and it's starting to get legitimately good again.

No idea if this is actually true or not; I can't be assed figuring out a way to watch the show when I don't even have a TV.

Marvel movies?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The shift to streaming was the nail in the coffin for universal cultural references. There is literally nothing that most people have seen anymore.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Only not really. I've always hated The Simpsons and have never watched more than about five minutes of it. I also hate Friends.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Not every single person from a generation has to watch and/or like something for it to be a pop culture icon for the generation. I don’t like The Simpsons either, but just you and me(plus others) not liking it doesn’t contradict OP. So you’re “not really” means nothing here, because it’s not enough to disprove the pop cultural legacy of The Simpsons. That’s like someone mentioning the cultural significance of Mario, and someone earnestly saying “It’s not that significant, because I don’t play it”.

SA

You might have actually meant “I’m not sad that new generations won’t have cultural icons like The Simpsons, because I don’t like it”.

Which is completely valid, and I’m just a dumbass who reads intentions wrong way too often. In which case, my sincere apologies, my earlier reply was uncalled for.

I don't think that's what they meant, because in that context "Only not really" doesn't really make a lot of sense.

My reply meant that it was not a universal generational cultural reference. I don't think any piece of media can be that. My school (of 2k+ kids) had one person that would try to talk about it, but no one else was ever interested. They did reference Friends, but it faded away pretty quickly.

I think, out of a school of 2k+ kids, one is not "universal".

I don't like Friends either, it's not funny and I find it particularly annoying that two of them are supposed to be the dumb ones but they're ALL dumb.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
“it's not funny”

Different strokes for different folks, I think it’s hilarious.

And I don’t personally get why the second part annoys you? That’s also a subjective thing, obviously, and I’m not judging you for it. I just legitimately don’t get it.

Also, only Joey is supposed to be the really dumb one. And second, it’s called out all the time that all of them are pretty dumb in different ways, just not go Joey’s extent.

This. I hate shows where the point is that everyone is dumb or everyone is an asshole. Watching horrible people be mean to each other or dumb people get each other into stupid problems is not entertaining for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The Simpsons isn't actually universal. This is very Anglocentric.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The Simpsons are like insanely popular worldwide, I think at this point they're very likely more popular in non-English speaking countries

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
At least in some Spanish-speaking countries, that bit where Homer imagines Bart as a rat is a popular meme. And a lot of references are changed to more recognizable ones in the Latin American Spanish dub.

This

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
They do the same for a lot of other dubs too.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, briefly there was GoT with the whole "You know nothing", etc. etc.

"Oh sweet summer child" Ugh fuck off.

Now I see "It is the way" everywhere, from Mandelorian.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Every now and again something really sweeps the public consciousness like Tiger King, Stranger Things, the Mandalorian, but these are pretty rare and really only applies for the first season.

I don't mind because I didn't like Friends or The Simpsons so the cultural juggernaut just left me feeling like an outsider. I'm ready for the style of reference humor to fade and I think as our pop-culture gets more fractured it'll have to.
