Only not really. I've always hated The Simpsons and have never watched more than about five minutes of it. I also hate Friends.

Not every single person from a generation has to watch and/or like something for it to be a pop culture icon for the generation. I don’t like The Simpsons either, but just you and me(plus others) not liking it doesn’t contradict OP. So you’re “not really” means nothing here, because it’s not enough to disprove the pop cultural legacy of The Simpsons. That’s like someone mentioning the cultural significance of Mario, and someone earnestly saying “It’s not that significant, because I don’t play it”.

You might have actually meant “I’m not sad that new generations won’t have cultural icons like The Simpsons, because I don’t like it”.

Which is completely valid, and I’m just a dumbass who reads intentions wrong way too often. In which case, my sincere apologies, my earlier reply was uncalled for.

I don't think that's what they meant, because in that context "Only not really" doesn't really make a lot of sense.

My reply meant that it was not a universal generational cultural reference. I don't think any piece of media can be that. My school (of 2k+ kids) had one person that would try to talk about it, but no one else was ever interested. They did reference Friends, but it faded away pretty quickly.

I think, out of a school of 2k+ kids, one is not "universal".

That makes sense. I apologize for jumping to conclusions.

I don't like Friends either, it's not funny and I find it particularly annoying that two of them are supposed to be the dumb ones but they're ALL dumb.

“it's not funny”

Different strokes for different folks, I think it’s hilarious.

And I don’t personally get why the second part annoys you? That’s also a subjective thing, obviously, and I’m not judging you for it. I just legitimately don’t get it.

Also, only Joey is supposed to be the really dumb one. And second, it’s called out all the time that all of them are pretty dumb in different ways, just not go Joey’s extent.

Phoebe's not supposed to be dumb??

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
She’s mostly supposed to be quirky and flaky. And that doesn’t always mean dumb, irl and in-universe. She’s just kind of out there and will say anything. I do get why that makes her seem like a second dumb character, I just don’t see her that way. Maybe I’m actually off base here lol, it wouldn’t be the first time.

This. I hate shows where the point is that everyone is dumb or everyone is an asshole. Watching horrible people be mean to each other or dumb people get each other into stupid problems is not entertaining for me.
