Recs for Horror Lite

(Anonymous) 2022-10-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Distinguished from the previous ask by the intensity of scares. Here I'm thinking of something at the level of like Crimson Peak, for example. Definitely a horror movie, but pretty mild as far as that stuff goes. It wants to send chills up your spine, but it doesn't want to, like, wreck you. You know?

Obviously people are scared by different things, so YMMV is an assumed caveat on any recs ITT.

I think Sleepy Hollow probably falls into this category. :)

Jennifer’s Body and The Sixth Sense.

I count slashers in this category, especially slasher sequels.

The Others sounds like it might be your thing.

Omg, I've got some shitty movies for you, if you'd like

The Covenant (which I always thought was a wack ass werewolf movie only to find out a year or two ago it was about hot guy witches smh)

Never Cry Werewolf (shitty SyFy movie feat. Nina Dobrev and suspect but somehow attractive neighbor??? I watched it when I was in HS for the werewolf/human girl vibes because yeah)

For non shitty but great to watch with a friend sexy Dracula, the hot one, where it's the 1970's and omg Frank Langella's hands (melting here).

The Wicker Man (1973) is psychological horror that sneaks up on you but doesn't really have much gore.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) is about on the level of Crimson Peak I think in terms of scariness.

I watched The Wickerman once and have never been able to rewatch it. That movie unsettled me more than any movie I'd seen before or since.

Poltergeist? Or maybe The Birds? Uh, maybe not The Birds now that I'm starting to remember it more... The Sixth Sense?

The Woman in Black

We Have Always Lived in the Castle (2018)
The Awakening
The Wolfman (2010)
The Babadook (2014)
Season of the Witch (2011)
The Conjuring
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)

Dog Soldiers (a bit gory, but overall surprisingly good)

Ravenous (1999)

I’m not one for “real” horror movies, but I love this one. Stars the fantastic Robert Carlyle and Guy Pearce.

The horror elements are mostly cannibalism and (not very realistic) blood.

The Invitation (2015)

Cast a Deadly Spell is a horror comedy set in an alternate universe post-WW2 Los Angeles where magic works. There's not much gore, but lots of fun.

The Orphanage (2007) - A family moves into an old orphanage and discover strange happenings. Not gory or jump-scary, more spooky mystery/thriller.
