Yes, tumblr and twitter have normalized everything spilling over into everything else, so instead of most wanks being a minor kerfuffle in a single fandom, every wank is high stakes drama pulling in people all over the place. Add that to the current tendency to think that everything has to be framed in terms of great importance (e.g. you don't just dislike a ship, that ship is homophobic/racist/misogynist/pedophilic) and you've got a recipe for bad takes and endless drama.
