Yes! I felt a level of misogyny when people griped that Frodo and Legolas were "too pretty", hated that Arwen had a lot more to do in FOTR than she did in the books, made mean comments about Liv Tyler's mere existence, and that new fans were shallow and stupid and ruining the epic importance of Tolkien's works and fantasy at large.

I remember all of this, and don't get me started on the over the top homophobia when people posted m/m fics, or the misogyny if they wrote female OCs.

O hai, pro-shipping anon.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-27 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
DA What? That's basic fandom history, nothing to do with pro- or anti- shipping.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-27 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, please. We all know that every discussion inevitably comes down to you saying something about the nasty anti-shippers. It is getting boring.

Want some ketchup for that enormous chip on your shoulder?

This is well trodden LOTR fandom history. It also has nothing to do with antishippers and everything to do with the homophobia and misogyny of the old school fans.

AYRT I'm the person who said "fandom history" not the person talking about m/m, and I'm not sure what you're talking about. There was indeed a lot of homophobia and misogyny, and the term "anti" wasn't even invented at the time. There was none of the "soft gay holding hands uwu" anti stuff, it was outright "ew homos".

Uh, a lot of old school fandoms had this same problem, slash used to be majorly controversial.

Also, most people on FS aren't keen on anti-shippers, so the idea it's just one anon who dislikes them is ludicrous.

I'm the one who posted about m/m and homophobia and misogyny (yes, a lot of Mary Sue fic is not really good reading for people who aren't the writer, and also yes a lot of the over the top hatred of it was misogyny directed at women and girls who dared to write a fun fantasy without being masterful writers). I was there, Gandalf.

Yeah, I think pro-shippers are the majority of regular posters here. Antis really stand out. There have always been pits of vipers whose entire fandom presence is based on tearing other people down, it's just that back then the accusations were more likely to be "bad Mary Sue fic" and "not respecting Tolkien's vision, he was Catholic, he would never have endorsed this gay shit." Now it's about fake pedophilia. Same shit, different shirt.

I should mention the terms "anti" and "pro-shipper" didn't exist back then. They're pretty recent inventions. The words are new-ish, the behavior is not.
