It is a persistent problem, fandom has always had a lot of young people with a shaky grasp on nuance in it, but lately there has been a rush to see who can post the most scathing takedown post on anything even remotely seen as problematic, which is exacerbating the problem.

People are honestly terrible with paying attention to dates and time periods.

For historical context, for finding out if something would be possible during a time period, for using modern words or phrasing in period media, for remembering how much some attitudes have changed, etc.

I've gotten comments on years-old fic about things that happened in canon after the fic was written.

I mean, I've felt nuance is something people seem unable to grasp onto. It's part of the "main character" issue that plagues society (one can argue as a result of capitalism selling the "individual" mindset). So many of us are conditioned to believe our personal worldview is the end-all-be-all "opinion" that matters most. So many will assume the only way to read and critique anything at all is exclusively through their personal IRL lense in that moment.
As if having reference points, a little knowledge of authorial intent, challenging one's biases/personal worldview makes you lame/a try hard/snob/IDEFK.

I want to yell at all these people who are so quick to pile on their opinions "YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE ROOM".

I sort of agree but my thing is basically, one, our awareness of the fact that the past had different standards doesn't mean we can't bring our moral standards to bear; it just means we have to be thoughtful and aware when we do it. Two, it's a really easy and common mistake to make to think that people in the past were far worse and more evil than they really were, and particularly, far more unanimous in their moral views than they were. And that's absolutely wrong, and it leads to huge historical misjudgments, IMO. There's tons of stuff where actually people at the time did make moral critiques and did think that it was wrong.

I think it's easy to say "well it was the past everyone thought like that" but a lot of the time that's just not accurate.

Because if you arrived on the scene too late to build a fandom up, you can still be there to be the one to tear it down and salt the ground. Yay, making an impact.

It doesn't help that it's been the 80's/90's/and NOW* for the past 20 years. So it's real easy to forget that 2002 was 20 complete years ago.

if you're that old then you've lived through decades of both good and bad practical effects, terrible rotoscoping mistakes, a decade of truly awful CGI, and then better CGI which has made shitty CGI stand out like spray-painted bubble wrap. whether practical or computer, bad effects are bad effects that take people out of the story. ain't no high ground here.

that said, CGI artists and animators need a union like the makeup and costume guilds. farming out your green-screening to the lowest bidder helps no one except the Disney front office.

It was the inevitable result of LotR becoming popular after the Jackson trilogy. Back when it was just a book fandom, the only controversy was if Balrogs wore bunny slippers or not.

Actually, even the Jackson Trilogy inpouring wasn't so bad. It was the entitlement-fans with the Hobbit Trilogy that trashed the place by being so damn screechy over every single goddamn thing, because they were the Cinemasins/TVtropes generation who thought being snide and having putdowns were the same as actual fan activity. The sin is always, new people *ding*.

If a jockey ever gives you an "inside tip" on a 300/1 horse that just did amazing in training and is looking super frisky, then for the love of god, actually take it. I did. I am going on holiday somewhere nice for the first time next year based on that one. Thanks, wee man. I needed that. I've been sitting on this one for a while, 'cause I didn't want to even slightly risk someone figuring out the horse or jockey and get him in trouble.
