Inspired by #8: are you superstitious?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-27 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any superstitions you can't help but follow?

Not sure if this is a superstition or just an OCD-like tendency, but I have this thing about numbers of things always being even. Like I want 2 or 4 of something, not 3.

I'm the other way, I always want 3 or 5 of something! Not about superstition, just a weird brain thing.

I'm normally not superstitious at all with two specific exceptions:
I believe it's very bad luck to say or write a certain expression. I can't say what it is but it's used to indicate hope after a very long term bad situation. Here's a hint: it sounds like it means a train coming the other way.
Monkey years by the Chinese calendars always have the worst celebrity deaths.

That killing spiders is bad luck, I really don't like doing it. Also the concept op "jinxing" things.

I avoid killing spiders but it's not a superstition, I just like spiders.

Not sure if it's a superstition, but I don't like to talk about something good that might happen until it's an actual, real thing.

I didn't tell anyone exSO and i were househunting until I had the actual front door key in my hand and we were moving in, because it just seemed to invite bad energy to mention it.

Yup!

I think (at least in my culture) it's also associated with people giving the evil eye about it. So you don't talk about the good things until they're there lol.

I 100% do this as well, even if something I nearly confirmed I won't talk about it unless I have everything in my hands(literally or figuratively) and it's a 300% done deal, and for the same reasons as to not 'jinx' it.

I never pet black cats, rats, or bats.

There are good solid reasons not to pet (wild) rats or bats.

Re: Inspired by #8: are you superstitious?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-28 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I go out of my way to pet specifically black cats.

If I see a cat or dog on the way to work in the morning, I know it will be a good day. If I see road kill of some kind, I know it will be a bad day.

I’m more superstitious than I generally think of myself as. I believe in jinxing good things by talking about them before they’re a sure thing. I always knock on the nearest wooden object when I mention something that’s going well. I try to avoid looking at the clock when it says 11:11, because anything I wish for (purposely or not), the opposite will happen. And I don’t name the Scottish play.

If I spot a Magpie I always have to say 'Good day Mr Magpie.' 3 times. It's a pretty popular superstition in the UK, the saying changes a lot though, and I wonder if other countries do similar.

We have so many magpies around our house, I'd never get anything done if I had to do this haha!

Knock wood.

Knock on wood (even if it's my head). Crows are good luck to me (esp. in multiples of three). Salt the doorways to keep out bad spirits, mint in the purse for good luck, double check things before leaving the house (stove/taps/lights off/door locked). If I click a pen it has to be three times. Black cats are good luck. Draw sigils on frosted windows/mirrors to ward. Always say drive safe and I love you.

A few. Printers can smell fear. Getting up from the table will summon your food at a restaurant. I'm extra careful on full moons and Friday the 13ths. I throw salt over my shoulder and knock on wood. I NEVER say "It's too quiet."

If I complain about something annoying but necessary, something karmicly worse will happen. I'm late to work because someone had a medical emergency on the train and it needed to stop for help? Don't say anything or next time I'll be the one with the medical emergency, and nobody will stop to help me.

Touching wood to avoid a jinx, saying hello to magpies to ward off bad luck, and never voting for right-wing candidates in elections because they can cause ruin to everyone and thing.

If I see a rainbow, something bad will happen to me. The bigger the rainbow, the worse the future will be. Once I saw a rainbow. A few weeks later, I got in a crash toward the end of the day while driving a postal truck. I suspect the inner ear problems I have now is a result of this crash. If I ever see a double rainbow, I will be extremely worried about someone close to me dying. Or even me dying.

Knocking on wood three times to avoid a jinx/bad luck. I also don't do my country's version of crossing your fingers for good luck because I think it brings me bad luck if I do it.

Whenever I board a plane, I always make sure to touch the outside of it. Why? I don't know, it's just a thing I have to do.
