I shipped it before the show, although only in a crack sense where he's obsessed with this elf who hates his guts precisely because she hates him so much (even as Annatar when she doesn't know who he is). So the show only made me ship harder.

I have trouble reconciling it with the bookverse too, but then I just tell myself that ROP is just a billion-dollar fanfic of the LOTR Appendices, so writing fic of it is basically second-gen subcreation. And they're hot together.

Oh, please. Book snobs are always the worst snobs. We saw it with LotR first time round, we've seen it with GRRM shows, with Jane Austen, even in the fucking Twilight and Fifty Shades fandoms, someone always comes in with what they think is the putdown that they've read the book and it isn't good enough. I'm sick of it. I'm glad you read and enjoyed the book, now quit acting like that is something that makes you more of a fan. Ok, OP?

I'm the subthread OP and I gotta admit, I'm baffled by that over the top response. They literally don't have the rights to the Silmarillion, which describes events in this time period in more detail. So they have to make up a different story. So they're two pretty separate canons. It HAS to be much less book-canon compliant than the LOTR movies were, and I knew that going in. I'm enjoying this aspect of the show because it means I can still be surprised.

I kind of ship it, but there's just something missing in their chemistry for me. I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe it's the pacing? It's a shame, because I really liked that line about her binding him to the light. Usually I'm all over that.
