I don't really know what to say to this, except to offer you sympathy, OP. Depression often makes me hate myself too, and feeling isolated in something like fandom, that's meant to be fun and provide connection, really sucks.

I totally get you. I am pretty isolated in my fandom life, too. I have friends, but not friends with whom I can share fandoms because we all have different times, genres and ways to enjoy our media.
The best I have is rec shares with a friend who is a big horror fan like me. We don't particularly dive into the movies we watch, but we just share titles we find interesting with each other. That's it.

My own wife did something similar to me. We both started watching a tv show, and she liked it and I really liked it. So she stopped watching it BECAUSE I liked it so much and wanted to talk about it with her. Like, she literally said that was why she stopped watching it. She now says that she'll watch it again when I'm over it. Like...????

Okay, on the surface that sounds really callous and insensitive of your wife. But. Are you someone who gets extremely obsessed with things and brings them up constantly and maybe even segues into them often or shoehorns them into conversations? Because as someone who can be like that myself, and who has to actively exert effort at NOT constantly bringing up whatever I'm currently obsessed with, if you're obsessive and NOT working at cultivating some chill then I can maybe see where your wife might be coming from a bit.

That's a very specific "if." I'm not saying you definitely are this way. It just feels like maybe there's more to it than "your wife is callous and likes sabotaging her marriage one shared interest at a time."

I do get obsessive, but I work very hard on being respectful of other people's time and interests. Definitely not shoehorning. Like, maybe once or twice a week, between episodes, I would ask a her opinion about characterization or plot during a silent moment at the dinner table. I get the most exasperated sighs when she would walk behind me while I was on the computer and notice I was looking at gifs from the show, or when I mentioned that I was going to be busy during a specific time for a discord re-watch - things that effect her not at all.

She was never like this for my other obsessions; she listened to me talk about The Untamed for *months*. This is the first time, though, that she has seen part of the thing I'm obsessed with. I don't know why that makes a difference, but somehow it does.

That could be the problem, actually. It's possible that she didn't mind listening to you talk about things she wasn't into BECAUSE she wasn't into them, but when you're talking about something she's also watching and enjoying, the talking starts to take away from her own enjoyment of the thing and she doesn't want that.

Which makes no sense to me, because she's in fandom too, and you....talk about the thing you're enjoying? And as I said, it's not the only thing I'm talking about, so it seems to me she just doesn't want to be in fandom with ME.

Yeah, I definitely have some friends where I DON'T want to be into the same thing as them at the same time because they just... are totally incapable of talking about anything else, and even if it's something I also enjoy, it just gets exhausting.

Just because I like, say, pizza, that doesn't mean I want to talk about pizza all the time.

oof, yeah I'd ask what her deal is.

i will say that for myself, if I have a different thought-process for something than someone else, like a difference in intensity or depth, it's not actually that fun to talk about with them when I'm on the shallower end of invested

Been there, done that. I'd write the book on it but I'm sure former fandom friends would just ignore it until their other friends gushed about it :P
