Where's that "That's not how that works! That's not how any of this works!" bit from that one commercial when you need it?

Why is age gap the only thing antis cling to even when other ammunitions are kinda right there? Makes you think.

I remember seeing someone hand-wringing over the idea of people shipping the two Overwatch characters that are animals genetically engineered to have human level intelligence... because one is a hamster and since hamsters don't live to 18, he'd have to be underage.

People rightly laughed at them and pointed out the age is far from the biggest issue there.

I hate the anti mindset. Like, I'm not personally interested in a ship between a seventeen year old girl and a twenty year old guy, but if she's approaching eighteen then it's the kind of age gap that Romeo and Juliet laws would cover. And I think when I was seventeen, that's the kind of thing that would have appealed to me.

But it's hard to summon up much feeling for them, when I've seen as much vitriol towards my ship as I have, and when, like...

In no way can I buy that these two people are falling in love?? They have a cute interaction where like... they discover that the other person is nice, and they connect a little, and he's charming and waffles over selling her hard drugs, but not a single moment of it is really *romantic*, she actually loves her boyfriend and she's not going to throw a long-term romance with presumably some level of shared interest out the window because her drug dealer is kind to her.

Like I don't get how people get so INTO it when they have less than two whole conversations and then she dies, it doesn't scream 'staying power' to me ship-wise, but I'm not surprised there's anti backlash just because I've seen so much anti nonsense everywhere, and tbh, I see a lot of people in the ST fandom who are susceptible to that. And that is a shame, because even if I have my own reasons for not getting/enjoying the ship, anti shit is a whole other level and no one deserves to be attacked over their fictional ships.

IT'S A WORK OF FICTION. Leave it alone. Just don't read these things if you disapprove. Fight age gaps in reality if it bothers you that much. You're becoming as bad as the book-banners!

A bunch of my mutuals are big into Eddie/Chrissy and woo boy the antis they deal with are unhinged.

Some went as far as photoshopping Grace's tumblr posts to make it look like she was a racist bigot and others still refuse to believe those aren't real posts because they want to make the ship as problematic~ as possible.

I feel like the people who say those sorts of things have never actually interacted with another human being in real life or else they would know that... two-year age gaps in high school are super common and totally normal. Hell, I was dating a junior when I was a freshman. We met at a school-sponsored event, found out we had a whole lot in common, started hanging out together and then feelings formed. No one thought anything of a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old going out.

14 and 18, yeah, that might be weird, but less than that? That's completely normal.
