Re: Henry Cavill quits The Witcher

I’m shocked he didn’t quit sooner. He’s a Witcher fan and while he hasn’t been loud about it, he hasn’t been entirely silent about his disappointment in the show, either. Netflix really should have replaced the showrunner after the first season and brought in someone who understood the books and could keep track of the plot lines and timelines. Costuming improved for s2 at least but that is solely down to Henry Cavill’s efforts. The showrunner and her staff really seemed to believe they did a good job on s1 and didn’t need to improve anything.

I wish they’d replaced the showrunner and Anya Chalotra, instead. Henry Cavill would have put everything else off if The Witcher was the show he dreamed it would be.

Why should they replace Yennefer's actress?

Because she hates the source material and the show was very specifically supposed to be true to the source material. She was a big part of why they stopped adapting the books after s1. She’s also the only one who’s openly mocked Henry Cavill for being a Witcher fan. It makes no sense casting someone who hates the property as one of the main characters.

Sorry but I have a hard time believing that a relative newcomer has this much pull with the producers where the legit A-list headliner doesn't. She may very well hate the books but if they don't even take Cavill's opinion into consideration, then no actor's opinion matters. This sounds like a tinhat theory to stoke hatred for the actress, I'm sure for no reason any of us can discern...

She’s only one of many who hate the source material, not sure where you’re getting the idea she’s the reason he left. She isn’t. The writers and showrunner are why he left. The original comment is about how Netflix should have replaced her and the showrunner. Bringing in a new showrunner would have meant a change in writing staff who didn’t hate the source material. And getting rid of her would have meant a cast that actually liked what they were working on.
Netflix doesn’t care about any of that though, it’s why they’re in trouble. And instead of getting rid of the bad showrunner they’ve signed a blanket deal with her and she’s going to make many shows for them. It’s pretty clear the Netflix execs and the showrunner had no idea what they promised or the consequences of breaking that promise. And they obviously had zero clue about why the show was successful despite all of that.

Uh, where did I get the idea? Maybe literally from your comment: "She was a big part of why they stopped adapting the books after s1". And the hell you mean *I* said she's the reason Cavill left? I'm basically telling you I don't believe for a moment Chalotra's opinion about the source materials had anything to do with any creative decisions... or even that she has any strong opinion about them at all. The reality is most actors have no opinion whatsoever about the nerd books these shows are based on and even if they did, the producers wouldn't care. It's just a job to them. Henry Cavill is a unicorn in this regard.

But I can already tell that logic isn't your forte when in one sentence you claim the actress is only "one of many who hate the source material" and in the next singling her out for firing so that they could have "a cast that actually liked what they were working on". Make it make sense.

She’s the only cast member who hates the source material. She’s also friends with the showrunner which is how she got the job. She also kicked off about storylines in the books and said she wouldn’t do them. Because of the frankly disgusting racist reaction by some truly pathetic “fans” there was zero chance they would risk losing her.

Yes, Henry Cavill is the unicorn here. But this was pitched and purchased as a unicorn show that was being made for the existing fans and was going to stay true to the source material.

I personally think the show would have been better off if it didn’t include cast members who hated the source material. That’s not illogical for what this show was supposed to be. Why cast someone who didn’t want the job? Of course in this case the answer is because they’re friends.

But she is only one part of the bigger problems with the show, which is the showrunner and the writers.

My original comment was meant only that after season 1 they should have gotten rid of the people who hate the world of the Witcher. They didn’t. Season 2 sucked. The week after they confirmed they’re done filming season 3 with no need for reshoots, the star quit the show. And he’s the only reason most of the audience watch the show.

NAYRT, but what rock do you have to be hiding under to think that Henry Cavill is the only reason "most of the audience" watches the Witcher? That's not even true of the book first fans, who are a minority of the people who watch the series.

What rock are you living under that you haven’t read any of the fandom reaction or any comments on any of the articles about him quitting that makes you think people watch for any reason other than Henry Cavill? Like, there are now actually articles about that very thing LOL

And no, most of the book first fans aren’t watching for him. They’re not watching at all.

Oooh, if there's an article on the internet then obviously it's true! Not like anyone can write those about anything. God, life must be so simple for you.

But out there in the world that the rest of us live in, that's not "everyone's" reaction. The fandom reaction hasn't been an echo chamber at all unless you've curated your fandom experience to only listen to people who share your opinions, and even the "everything is ruined now" camp is about 50/50 split between the Cavill fans and the ones who think Hemsworth will be fine but are opposed to any late game cast changes.

Look, you've made your agenda pretty clear at this point and we get it. Nobody is going to force you to watch the mean bad show full of mean nasty women who just don't appreciate your mediocre fantasy series as much as they should. You're going to be just fine.

Uh yeah no actor has this much pull my dude, they're employees. They can sometimes get a say in dialogue choices or physical stuff, but the actual plot-lines? Nah. That's all chosen by people who have power in the room, not the faces of selling you a show.

It's such a bummer since he didbsay he was fully committed to 7 seasons of being geralt :(

Yep but only if they followed the source material. Season 2 was an absolute shitshow and it sounds like 3 isn’t going to be any better. The showrunner, writers, and Anya Charlota hated the source material which is why nothing in s2 is from the books.
