(Anonymous) 2022-10-31 01:39 am (UTC)(link)It's pretty much the last of the Midwestern 'blue wall' and that can tell you a lot of the people who live here and how the state functions. I've also lived in a few years in Wisconsin and even moving a few hours away, the overall culture totally changed. Minnesota actually funds its state programs. For example, I have never had to wait to vote for more than three minutes. EVER. And that's living in a small town, medium town, and then in the Twin Cities. Our roads and sidewalks actually get worked on and improved instead of doing the bare minimum like some of our neighboring states. These are just little examples but it really makes a difference when your state actually invests in itself.
Our available healthcare is really great overall. The Mayo clinic is in state and has satellite clinics throughout the state so there is a world-class clinic/hospital system right there and I think it elevates the level of care in the whole state.
People are generally friendly but reserved. I don't know about Ely, but at least in the Cities and SE MN, there's a pretty strong 'geek' scene. There are a fair number of cons but they take place almost exclusively in the Twin Cities. Fun fact, the Twin Cities have the second most theater seats per capita in the US, only after New York.
There's actually a lot of diversity in the state. We have huge Hmong and Somali populations in particular. But, once again, I don't know if that diversity has really reached Ely.
Obviously, we have issues with law enforcement but I think it's pretty much on par with everywhere else in the country.
Ely is definitely kinda in the middle of nowhere though and I've only been up there as a tourist so it's going to be different. Though overall, even our Northern regions have many more nature enthusiasts than backwoods rednecks. For example, the countys along the North shore (Ely included) had the highest COVID vaccination rates in the state.
Northern Minnesota is absolutely beautiful. Ely's basically nestled in the Boundary Waters and it is just an amazing place to canoe and camp. Since there's not much in the way of animal husbandry up there, there isn't really tension with the wildlife. Just remember that the most dangerous animal is the moose and you'll be fine. (seriously, bears and wolves aren't an issue but moose are a monsters)
I personally love the cold and snow but if it is bothers you, this is not the state for you. Especially not near Ely.
Between the being the headwaters of the Mississippi, bordering Lake Superior, and having 11k+ lakes, I feel like we're a good place to avoid worst effects of all these droughts.
Housing prices skyrocketed during the pandemic but they have cooled off considerably. We are pretty reasonably priced, I think. More expensive than Wisconsin(you get what you pay for) but way less than, say, California.
Ely's International Wolf Center and the Bear Center are Amazing! Go see the weekly wolf feeding if you can, so cool. The bears get feed like every hour so anytime is good there. Also get the Root Beer lady's root beer. It's delicious.
(I wasn't joking about the moose. Stay Away From Moose)
