Agreed, honestly. I can't understand how people can disconnect from the fact that their celeb of choice is literally only near them because they've paid them amounts of money for it. It's not a Moment (TM), it's a transaction, and I just cannot get over that enough to believe there's anything genuine in it at all.

I really agree, though, like you, if someone wants to do this and it's a big deal for them, that's great! You do you! Have fun!

I don't like random people touching me - sure don't want to get hugged by this stranger who's been touching a hundred+ other strangers all day!

And yes - embarrassment and just general mortified horror are all part of this. It's why I've never been to a con because other than panels and meet&greets (which i won't do), there's not much *to* do that I would pay that much money for.

I've gone to plenty of cons, met a bunch of celebs (Nick Frost and Simon Pegg for example didn't charge anything for autographs) and it was a lot of fun. Yes, I was aware I was paying them for the interaction. But I could afford it, I wanted to spend the money and I enjoyed the experience, even if it was, for example, meeting Benedict Cumberbatch for a few mins.
There's a lot of condescention in these comments.
People spend their money on all types of ridiculous things all the time. Gees, can we stop with the judging already?

Honestly, there's something really satisfying about reading predictable, tropey fic. There's a reason that those stories are so common as to be predictable! There's a reason these tropes are so popular! There's a reason these beats keep getting used again and again! (But then at the same time, if you're not already 100% on board with the ship, it can be very aggravating and bad, lol)
