Yeah, this is part of the problem. Maybe it is a "grossly bigoted comment" or maybe you're interpreting it that way with your preemptive "fuck off." Either way, I suggest attacking the comment and not the person who made it. Sometimes people say stupid shit without realizing. Telling people to fuck off accomplishes nothing. It doesn't school them in what you found offensive about their comment. Likely, it just makes them think your side shouldn't be taken seriously. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I don't think telling someone to fuck off when they are being an asshole isn't toxic. And you know there are people being assholes on Fandom Secrets. Sometimes it's someone being very entitled, sometimes it's a terf, or sometimes it's just someone wrapped around the axle over something being hostile. I think letting that behavior go unchallenged would be toxic.

Now, dogpiling someone over a subjective opinion that doesn't insult or degrade others, yeah, I think that can be very toxic.

Being in tiny fandoms, 'problematic content' fandoms and technically dead fandoms have been my salvation in these trying times. I tend to avoid anything new (mostly sticking to the actual creative areas like fanfics and fanarts) because anything that has 'discourse' written anywhere just makes me 'nope' instantly because some people choose to lose their braincells on the internet and I did enough of that in my Undertales days to ever go back to that again.

As someone who's been a toxic asshole in fandom at one point, I agree. I get there's a lot of sensitive shit, especially if it ties in with real-life issues that might trigger real people... but I honestly don't care who you (general you) are or what you've been through. It's never acceptable to be abusive to anyone else, especially over fictional things. You're triggered? Step away from the computer until you calm down. Learn to write a response that gets your point across without being awful about it. Even if you think someone's being an idiot, you don't ever actually have to tell them. Seriously. Like... the world is not going to end if you're not "honest" about that.

I agree with you completely, OP.

I do not, however, agree with the mass amount of comments here saying that telling people to fuck off is equivalent to toxic arguments. If anything, a simple "fuck off" is a short and sweet "i don't like what you're saying and don't want to argue with you". It doesn't FIX anything, sure, but on the internet, neither does actual arguing. I'd rather see "fuck off" than have to rehash why transphobia and racism are bad again and again and again.

I feel like this is part of a cultural/societal thing. Reminds me a lot of the rise in angry patrons yelling at/being violent towards employees at public places.
People have such little control in their lives, places where you go in to buy goods or services are one of the few places you can feel like others have to please YOU for once and lately, people have been overwhelmingly been quick to escalate their anger because they want to be mad or they are quick to be mad because they aren't getting what they want at a place that is supposed to give them what they want.

Fandom toxicity IMO can be part of a system where emotions can be heightened so some can either be bad faith actors or just too quick to get caught up in the negativity where this is a small place where we can be nasty and feel justified in it.

Because the world is shit everyone wants to revel in being fucking shits.

Wish I could explain this better but I'm not a sociologist 😭 just that I'm thinking of something between "loss of faith in the system due to a great collective trauma" and "capitalism promising more freedom and choices actually provides less and we don't know how to express pain from the loss of creative freedom so we get mad on fandom bullshit"
