Is there any circumstance in which you can imagine it would be appropriate to tell someone to fuck off? Are we just arguing over where to draw the line here?

Of course there are situations where it's fine to tell someone to fuck off. Such as, when they won't stop harassing you and you have told them at least once to stop. But discourse? I'd make it a rule to attack the comment before attacking the commenter where possible. There are always going to be comments that are going to make you want to tell someone to fuck off. But if it's your default response to anything that doesn't agree with you, then there might be a problem.

Unfortunately, for some situations, that one comment won't be the first someone has seen that day or even that hour. In an ideal world, yes, it would be more helpful to personally explain to each new person we disgree why we disagree with them. But sometimes, the person who has to be explaining is just so fucking tired, that "fuck off" is what the 6th annoying person that day gets.

DA I agree, but you could also choose not to say anything at all. I've seen the invisible dogpile of silence work wonders at times.
